Lewis, pictured, returned to the club in May as the successor to Garry Haylock. He's managed just three wins so far this season after defeat in his final game in charge, Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Redditch United in the EVO-STIK League Southern's top flight.
Despite tendering resignation on Monday night, the 51-year-old former West Brom, Derby and Oxford United player will continue to work with the club’s academy youngsters.
In a statement on the EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division club's website, officials confirmed that director of football and UEFA A licensed coach Lewis, who's managed the club on two occasions previously, has taken the helm until a new permanent manager is appointed.
The club said: "After discussions with manager Mickey Lewis over the weekend, it has been mutually agreed that Mickey will step down as first team manager of Hayes & Yeading United with immediate effect.
"Director of football Tristan Lewis will take the reins for the forthcoming games on a caretaker basis, and the search for a new manager has already started, with a view to them taking over as soon as possible to guide the club up the Southern League Premier table."
