League One youngster joins Basingstoke on loan

Basingstoke Town have announced the signing of promising Scunthorpe defender Leslie Sackey on a month long loan deal by Nick Wilson.

The youngster came through the youth ranks at the League One club and signed his first professional contract this summer, being invited to train with the first team squad before travelling with them for their league match away to Millwall in April. It showed good progress for the full back after progressing through the Iron’s academy on a two year scholarship which included a number of standout performances for their Under 18 side.

Capable of playing both at left back and in the centre of defence, he has also previously played as a striker and was a part of Reading’s youth system before moving north at the start of the 2015/16 season. Tony Daws, Sackey’s academy manager at Glanford Park, noted his excellent aerial ability, as well as his physical prowess saying he’s “technically very good and also a strong, solid defender”.

Basingstoke will be his second loan club of the season, having previously been sent out to Sheffield FC in the Northern Premier League Division 1 South. He brings our squad up to 19 senior players, plus a number of academy players knocking on the door of the first team. Leslie will be available to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s match away at Frome.
