The respected former player, coach and manager at a number of Non-League clubs including Aveley, Boreham Wood, Dover Athletic, Enfield Town, Grays Athletic, Potters Bar Town and Wealdstone, pictured, passed away over New Year aged 45 after losing a long battle with cancer.
Hailed by the fans of many of his former clubs on social media as one of their "greats" since his death was reported, he made 45 appearances for the Rebels as a player. After joining as assistant manager to Graham Roberts in the early part of the 1998-99 season, he went on to guide the club on a memorable run to the first round of the FA Cup in 2002 after taking the helm.
The Rebels announced the sad news in a statement on New Year's Day. "All at Slough Town Football Club were saddened to learn of the passing of former first team player and manager Steve Browne today after a battle with cancer," read a club statement. "Our thoughts are with Steve's family and friends at this difficult time."
Since starting his battle with bowel cancer, Browne had become an ambassador for the Men's Health Forum and last year supported the charity's Know The Score campaign after it teamed up with the Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers' Association.
