Extension ends exit speculation

Matty Holmes has ended any speculation over his future by signing a new deal to stay at the helm of Wimbourne Town in the EVO-STIK League Southern for at least another season.

The former Bournemouth star has agreed to extend his stay at Cuthbury for a second campaign with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season, his decision to sign a new 12 month contract ending speculation that February's departure of former chairwoman Paula Henley could lead to his own departure.

Holmes, pictured, took the helm at the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One South & West a few weeks after the end of last season and is set to continue combining his managerial duties with working for the club in separate coaching and community roles. With his side currently ninth, he is also targeting the club's highest ever finish in Non-League's pyramid.

The Magpies are thrilled to secure Holmes and see him continue his work on and off the pitch. The club said: "Wimborne Town is delighted to announce Matty Holmes will remain as manager of the club for the 2017-18 season.

"Matty's role as first-team coach is remunerated on a part-time basis, in line with other managers' wages operating at this level of football. Matty is also employed by the club to carry out coaching and community projects outside of his management role.

"This additional role is key to the overall success of the club and has contributed significant income during the current season, which is set to further increase next season and beyond. The club is very much on track with its plans and securing Matty again was paramount."

Holmes, who guided his side to a 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Tiverton Town on Saturday, succeeded Simon Brown in May 2016 after leaving his post as manager of the academy at the Cherries. Before moving on to play for West Ham in the top flight, he made 114 appearances in four years for Wimbourne's Football League neighbours.
