Emmerson Wins It For Boro

By David Simpson

Hard fought win

Banbury United travelled to Hampshire on Wednesday night to take on Farnborough at the Rushmoor Community Stadium looking to move to within a couple of points of the top five in the Evo-Stik League South Premier.

However, they were beaten 1-0 – Boro ending a five-game run without a win to lift them up to seventeenth in the table.

Banbury dominate for long periods of the game but were unable to find the killer touch.

They also had a couple of `goals` rules out for infringements.

The Puritans also came very close to taking the lead just 2 minutes into the second half when Leam Howards turned sharply on the edge of the penalty area, but his shot thundered against the bottom of the post and came out.

A minute later and a cross saw a mass of players going in at the far post with Ricky Johnson’s header bouncing up over the crossbar.

Banbury had made an excellent start to the second half but in the 57th minute Farnborough would take the lead when a free-kick from wide on the right went through to Keith Emmerson on the edge of the area, and his shot flew back across the goalmouth into the far corner of the net.

Banbury fought back and a Charlie Hawtin shot from 25 yards was punched away by Boro `keeper Patrick O’Flaherty and a cross from Jordy Ngathe saw Johnson’s header at the far post go back over the home custodian but then hit the crossbar and go over.

Banbury continued to pile on the pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game but it Farnborough held out.
