Derby dedicated to late chairman

Fleet Town are dedicating their EVO-STIK League Southern derby clash with Farnborough on Tuesday night to their late chairman Steve Cantle.

Originally postponed on Boxing Day as a mark of respect for the Hampshire club's "beloved" chairman following his sudden death two days before Christmas, the Blues had hoped to play the EVO-STIK League Southern Division One Central fixture on January 24 before bad weather saw the rearranged match postponed.

The Blues say their much-loved late chairman, pictured, who'd lived with his wife and family in the area for more than 20 years, had been 'really looking forward' to the local derby with their promotion-chasing rivals at Calthorpe Park.

Also a local councillor, he'd been awarded a Hart Voluntary Action award for his work organising and promoting sports for boys and girls in the town since 2002 and the Blues are inviting fans from throughout the area to attend the 7.45pm kick-off.

Fleet Town FC vice-chairman Richard Whittington told gethampshire.co.uk: “This is our big match in more ways than one. As a local derby it was always going to be the fixture of the season - now with Steve Cantle’s passing it will make it doubly so.

“It was a clash Steve was really looking forward to. The boys as always will be giving it 100 percent to do Steve and our club proud.”
