The club director is set to take the helm in the summer until at least the end of the 2018-19 season after chairman Ritchie Jeune announced he was stepping down at the end of current campaign but staying on as owner.
The Poppies chairman backed manager Marcus Law to lead them into the next campaign ahead of the weekend's action in a statement on Friday confirming they would continue to share the Latimer Park home of Burton Park Wanderers next season while he continued to lead the ground development project as an active member of the club's football committee.
Juene cited other commitments from stopping him from giving the role the 100 per cent attention it needed and his decision to put his trust in Mahoney who he has known for the last decade.
Chairman elect Mahoney called taking charge "one heck of an honour" in a message to fans on the club's website on Sunday after their 1-1 draw at home to
He said: "I will do everything in my power to make by tenure as chairman, when it starts, as successful as I possibly can. I can’t promise that I am going to get everything right or please everyone all the time but I can promise you that it won’t be through lack of trying.
"What I can promise you though is that the board, the management team and the players are already looking to next season with the aim of achieving both promotion and a decent run in the cup competitions. We will be taking steps from now until the end of the season to make sure that we’re in great shape to achieve these goals.
"Ritchie assured me that it was his focus to grow Kettering Town FC, investigate new ground opportunities and put the club on a solid footing that was driving him. To do this he needed to find more time and that meant stepping down as Chairman but he made it very clear he’d be staying put as owner.
"If I could have bottled the passion with which he spoke about his aspirations then I’d have enough to last me a lifetime. No one should ever question his commitment to this club, if anything this decision shows just what it means to him and how much he wants to push ahead."
