Sean Joyce hailed a massive result as Bideford ended a run of four games without a victory thanks to a last-gasp 1-0 win over rock-bottom Bishops Cleeve on Saturday.
The Robins had done everything but find the back of the net in the game, including missing a penalty through Ben Seymour, and it looked like they would be heading for a frustrating point that would have been their fourth draw in five matches.
Yet Sean Downing headed home in the last minute to give Joyce’s side the three points, and the Bide boss was delighted.
He said: “It was massive, really. To be fair, we just couldn’t get the first goal – if we’d have got the first goal, I think we’d have just gone through the gears.
“They came down and they had a shape about them – they didn’t really attack us in the first half, they just sat in and we had three or four glorious chances to get a goal and missed a penalty.
“As I said at half-time, the longer the game was 0-0, the harder it was going to be, just because everyone expected to beat them and hit them by five or six but we just couldn’t score.
“I felt sorry for their keeper, he was pulling saves off here, there and everywhere, and I had to open the game up, as a draw was no good for us, so we put three attackers on and left ourselves open to a couple of chances from them and they counter-attacked us quite well.
“They had a couple of chances, which they missed, but we were brave and, with the last kick of the game, we put a free-kick in and we scored from it.
“I felt sorry for them but, then again, I’ve been in that situation before and you need to play to get the three points.”
