Beaconsfield Town missed the opportunity to move level on points with AFC Rushden & Diamonds at the top of the Evo-Stik League South East table when they were held to a goalless draw at Holloways Park by ninth-placed Bedford Town on a freezing Monday night.
One has to applaud the 76 hardy souls who gave up the comfort of their warm living rooms to attend the game – especially those who travelled from Bedford on an evening when the forecast was for heavy snow later.
There was a dusting on the pitch, but the referee deemed it playable.
The best chance of the first half came on 23 minutes when veteran loanee striker Paul Benson played in Lee Roache, who beat Beaconsfield `keeper Ravan Constable from an acute angle, but Michael Peacock was on the line to clear and the ball fell straight into the arms of his keeper.
There was another close call at the other end late on when Tre Mitford lobbed Eagles` keeper Kyle Forster but the ball was cleared off the line by Devante Stanley.
Then in stoppage time, the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a foul by Ollie Swain on Mitford.
But after the interventions of one of his assistants, the referee brandished red cards to both players and no spot-kick.
