Bank Holiday Monday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Chippenham Town maintained their unbeaten start to the new EVO-STIK League Southern Premier Division season on Bank Holiday Monday with a 4-1 win against bottom-markers Cirencester Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The derby at Hardenhuish Park attracted a crowd of 468, who saw David Pratt after 17 minutes and Matt Jones five minutes later, give the Bluebirds a two-goal cushion at the break.

Matt Liddiard reduced the deficit seven minutes after the interval but Pratt`s second with 15 minutes left sealed the win, with Jones matching Pratt with his second in the third minute of stoppage time.

Slough Town, Leamington and Dunstable Town have also won five games out of seven.

Slough`s new Arbour Park attracted a terrific crowd of 1,401 and they saw the Rebels beat relegated Hayes & Yeading United 2-1, coming back from being a 10th minute Lloyd Macklin goal down to win.

Lee Barney equalised 10 minutes later and James Dobson won it for the hosts 15 minutes from time.

The Brakes won 2-0 at neighbours Stratford Town in front of another decent crowd of 523, Ryan Rowe bagging a brace for Leamington in the 23rd and 45th minutes.

Dunstable beat Hitchin Town 2-1 at Creasey Park.

Alex Cathline opened the scoring to give the Blues a 23rd minute lead that Vences Bola eventually added to in the 74th minute. Robbie Burns netted a last-gasp consolation for the Canaries.

At the opposite end of the table, Dorchester Town matched Cirencester in losing for a fifth time.

And this was the `big one` as far as the Magpies fans are concerned – the derby with Weymouth. A crowd of 1,231 at the Bob Lucas Stadium saw the Terras earn local bragging rights with goals from Billy Lowes after 39 minutes and Charlie Davis on 72 minutes – Matt Oldring replying four minutes later.

St Ives Town were also derby victors, away on their own ground against tenants Cambridge City.

In front of 429, Scott Sinclair gave the `away` side a 25th minute lead that Jack Higgs doubled eight minutes later from the penalty spot. David Femiola pulled one back five minutes later, but the `home` side were unable to find a leveller.

Biggleswade Town were also derby winners at the Carlsberg Stadium against St Neots Town with goals from Connor Hall after 51 minutes and then top scorer Inih Effiong on 68 minutes.

A depleted Banbury United side matched visiting Redditch United for most of the game but were eventually beaten by a Jazz Luckie goal just after the hour-mark.

The holiday derbies continued as newly-promoted Kings Langley hosted Chesham United at the Global Metcorp Stadium.

The Generals raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Adam Martin after 19 minutes and Brad Watkins three minutes later. Lewis Toomey pulled one back six minutes from time but Andy Leese`s side held on for the points.

Kettering Town recovered from Saturday`s home defeat by Stratford to win 2-1 at The Walks against King`s Lynn Town.

A crowd of 724 saw Dylan Edge give the home side the boost of an early first-minute lead. And they held that until the 67th minute when Brett Solkhon equalised and then Wilson Carvalho won it for the Poppies 12 minutes from time.

Basingstoke Town are still finding it hard to fully come to terms with the division after suffering relegation.

They won away on Saturday and then lost 3-1 at the Camrose to Frome Town, whose George Miller after five minutes, Aidan Kirby after 50 minutes and Sam Teale on 63 minutes, had them three-up before Sam Deadfield replied for `Stoke 14 minutes from time.

Promoted Cinderford Town won for the second time, 3-2 at home to Merthyr Town.

Gethyn Hill gave the Foresters a 20th minute lead from the spot, only for the Martyrs to turn that round with goals from Ian Traylor 10 minutes later and Ryan Prosser nine minutes after that.

Hill equalised on 63 minutes and then Ben Hands won it for the hosts four minutes from time.
